UW researcher wins $3M federal grant - San Francisco Business Times:

The grant from the U.S. Departmengt of Education's Institute of Educatiojn Sciences will allow Heinrich to emplogy academic staff and at least four graduate students each year to work on expandinvg the project o other Heinrich will continue an evaluatio of the tutoring programs MPS offers as part ofthe district's fulfillmeng of the federal No Child Left Behind law. The law requires public school that have not adequately increased student academidc achievement for three years to offer childrejin low-income families the opportunity to receive extra academifc assistance such as tutoring.
Heinrich's initial research foun d that Milwaukee's federally mandated and funded tutorint program is not necessarily reaching the people who need the most nor is it effective in increasingstudentt achievement. "Our preliminary results suggest that the studentz in the tutoring programs are not performing any bettefron Wisconsin's standardized tests than eligibls students not involved with the Heinrich said. Heinrich and her co-workers have been conducting the MPS study sincreApril 2006. The next phase will involve five urbanm school districts infour states: Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas and Austin, Texas.
