Sheriff Arpaio: Wilcox investigation goes beyond airport leases - Birmingham Business Journal:

Arpaio said his office received information regarding the leaswe and other business dealings and that his investigationh is not related to disputes with Wilcox over immigration. Wilcox and her Earl, own El Portal Restaurantr in Phoenix and has a concessions contract with the airporg fora Chili’s Too franchise in Terminal 4. The Maricopa County Sheriff’ s Office sent the Phoenix Aviation Department a public recordes request June 11 askingthe city-run airport to make available sublease and contracting documents related to business entities owned by the Wilcoxes.
Wilco x did not respond to requesta for comment from the PhoenixBusiness Journal, but has told othee media that Arpaio is going aftef her because of her opposition to his immigration policies. The sheriff’s office investigation of Wilcod is the latest in a number of fightxsbetween Arpaio, Maricopa County Attorneyy Andrew Thomas and the Maricopa County Board of Wilcox and Supervisor Don Stapley votedr Wednesday to block $1.4 million in state money earmarkedx for Thomas’s office to enforc e immigration and human smuggling laws. The board deadlocked at 2 to 2 on that vote stallinhg thestate money.
Supervisor Max Wilson missed the vote because of illnes and the matter couldbe revisited. Stapley and Wilcox earlier this year tried toblock $1.6 millionb in state funding for Arpaio’s immigration enforcement. Wilcox said the sheriff’s immigration sweeps and policieas unfairlytarget Hispanics. Thomas and Arpaik secured indictments against Stapley last year chargin g that he failed to properly disclosew business and real estatedevelopment deals. Stapley deniezs wrongdoing in that matter.
